7 Things Every New Mom Should Know Before the First Day of Daycare

Mom huggung her child before first day of daycare. daycare Transition tips by Ms. Narcy.

Starting daycare is a big milestone—not only for your child but for you as well. As both a Registered Early Childhood Educator and a mom, I’ve seen the tears, the worries, and the beautiful growth that follows. If you’re preparing for your child’s first day of daycare, here are seven things I hope will encourage you.

1. Tears at Drop-Off Are Normal

Many children cry during the first few days or weeks. It doesn’t mean daycare is the wrong place. Your child is learning that you’ll come back.

2. Children Usually Settle Faster Than You Think

One of the biggest surprises for parents is how quickly many children calm down after a loving goodbye. Once they begin exploring toys, meeting friends, or joining activities, their attention often shifts naturally.

3. Keep Goodbyes Short and Loving

A hug, a kiss, and a simple “I’ll be back after snack and nap” helps your child feel secure. Long goodbyes can sometimes make the separation harder.

4. Trust the Educators

Early Childhood Educators are there to comfort, guide, and support your child. We celebrate small victories, wipe tears, encourage friendships, and help children feel safe throughout the day.

5. Every Child Adjusts at Their Own Pace

Some children adapt in a few days, while others take several weeks. There is no perfect timeline. Be patient with your child—and with yourself.

6. Communication Is a Partnership

Share important information with your child’s educators, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. When parents and educators work together, children benefit.

7. Give Yourself Grace

Starting daycare is emotional for parents too. It’s okay to miss your child. It’s okay to wonder how they’re doing. You’re not alone, and those feelings are part of loving your child deeply.

A Final Encouragement

The first day of daycare is the beginning of a new chapter—not the end of your bond with your child. With time, consistency, and a caring partnership between home and daycare, confidence grows.

One day you’ll look back and realize that what once felt overwhelming became part of your family’s story.

You’re doing better than you think.
